Event Details

The geothermal mud will be flying in Rotorua for the Hells Gate Mud Rugby Festival.

Over three days the Hells Gate geothermal reserve will be hosting a series of special events to celebrate mud and, of course, the national game.

Team activities include:

Mud Rugby: get a team together and enter the mud rugby tournament. Four-a-side games are played in an elimination tournament, played in the mud obviously!

Mud Scrum Competition: test your team's scrummaging prowess with a sudden death elimination competition. Be the first to push your side over the ball to win.

Mud Tug of War: go head to head with rival teams in the sudden death elimination tug of war and stay standing to be crowned champion.

Individual activities include:

Interactive carving: try your hand at Maori carving or flax weaving

Ta Moko Face Painting: have a Ta Moko face tattoo (don't worry, the face paint is removable!)

Bentonite Body Painting: get creative with Bentonite clay, the key ingredient in Hells Gate geothermal mud. Rub the clay between your fingers to create a liquid which can be used as body paint and then show off your skills.

Mud Swan ‘Try’ Dive: enter the mud pool to show off your best diving try attempts.
Stuck in the Mud: who doesn't love a game of Stuck in the Mud - and this one is actually in the mud. Great fun for children aged 7-12

During the festival, the Hells Gate Mud Bath and Spa will be operating as usual and guided tours of the reserve will be available. Visitors can also add on hangi lunches, cooked in the traditional way and a tasting of food cooked in one of the natural thermal hot pools for an extra charge.

Tickets are $35 which includes entry to the reserve and all of the festival events. Book online here.
