The New Rotorua Lakefront Development

Editorial

An update on the transformation of Rotorua's Lakefront

The new Rotorua lakefront redevelopment project is up and running with the first stage now completed.  The public were able to see the new boardwalk and grass terracing when it was opened in mid-July 2021.  The development aims to create a world-class lakefront experience and a destination that enhances both the land and the lake.

The $40 million project has been jointly funded by the Rotorua local council and the government via the Provincial Development Unit (PDU).  When fully completed, the lakefront will allow the public to reengage with the water and access the lake for recreation while clearing away the clutter to better reveal the significance of Mokoia Island in the distance.

The 5-metre wide timber boardwalk arcs across the bay, joining headland to headland.  Each end of the boardwalk offers a distinct experience.  The western end is active, providing opportunity for canoeing, kayaking and other recreational water sports, including swimming.  The eastern end is a more reflective space that celebrates the landscape.

The impressive boardwalk is already being warmly received by locals and visitors alike.  The transformation has continued with a new playground, carpark and new city cycleway connection.
