Description
The tour starts from Hamilton, departing no later than 7:30 AM.
Bubbling Mud Pool
Begin at Wai-O-Tapu’s famous mud pool, where bubbling mud continuously vents heat and steam. This active geothermal site formed in a long-eroded mud volcano crater attracts photographers and nature enthusiasts with its dynamic natural activity.
Lady Knox Geyser
At 10:15 AM, watch the Lady Knox Geyser erupt a stream of water up to 20 meters high. This eruption is safely triggered daily with a natural surfactant. The amphitheater-style viewing area offers clear sightlines against the geothermal landscape.
Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland
Next, explore the surreal geothermal terrain on a self-guided walk along Track 1. Highlights include the vibrant Champagne Pool with orange edges and bubbling carbon dioxide, and the neon green Devil’s Bath. Take your time to experience these unique volcanic features.
Whakarewarewa Redwood Forest
After geothermal exploration, visit the Redwood Forest for a peaceful walk among Californian redwoods over 100 years old and up to 75 meters tall. The well-maintained tracks and filtered sunlight create a calm environment. Optional treetop walkways are available for an additional fee.
Te Waihou Walkway & Blue Springs
Conclude the day with a 1.5–2 hour return walk from the Leslie Road entrance. This easy trail passes through farmland and native bush to the Blue Springs, known for its crystal-clear, turquoise water that supplies about 60% of New Zealand’s bottled water.
