Description
Waimangu Volcanic Valley is a 20-minute drive south of Rotorua or 40 minutes north of Taupo. Begin with a 1.5 to 2-hour self-guided ecology walk on trails ranging from 1.5km to 4.5km, suitable for all abilities. Along the walk, see geothermal features such as Frying Pan Lake, Inferno Crater, steaming vents, and hot springs set within native forest and grasslands.
A complimentary shuttle bus operates within the valley to reduce walking distances. After the walk, board the Ariki Moana for a 45-minute cruise on Lake Rotomahana. The cruise passes Patiti Island and Starhill Crater, offering views of geysers and native birdlife. Live English commentary from the skipper explains the lake’s geothermal activity and the history of the Mount Tarawera eruption.
At the cruise’s end, return to the Visitor Centre by shuttle or on foot via an alternative walking track.
