Discover the lifecycle and conservation of New Zealand’s iconic kiwi on a guided visit to the National Kiwi Hatchery, the country’s largest kiwi hatching and rearing centre.
This one-hour Kiwi Encounter Tour offers insight into the incubation and raising of kiwi as part of a vital conservation programme protecting this endangered species.
Guided by knowledgeable conservation staff, you will explore purpose-built facilities, learn about kiwi egg incubation and chick development, and depending on the season, see eggs or chicks at various stages. The tour concludes in the nocturnal house designed to mimic nighttime conditions where you can observe live kiwi exhibiting natural behaviours.

Important Information
- Viewing eggs or chicks is seasonal, generally from September to March; outside this period, you will see resident adult kiwi in the nocturnal house
- Please arrive 15 minutes before the tour departure time
- The hatchery is accessed via a short shuttle transfer from the Agrodome
- For kiwi welfare, children under 5 years are not permitted in the facility
