Tour Description
Pickups are available from Taupo, Rotorua, and Whakatane accommodations at 8:30am. Drop-off occurs between 3:00pm and 3:30pm. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes and bring a camera.
The tour begins with a scenic 1.5-hour drive through unspoiled native forest to Whirinaki Forest. A 15-minute stop is made at Te Whaiti Marae to learn about indigenous Maori culture. Morning tea is provided before the first walk.
The first walk is a 1.5 to 2-hour guided exploration of Te Whaiti Nui A Toi Canyon & Waterfall. The guide shares knowledge about native plants, their medicinal uses, and stories related to Chief Toi Kairakau.
Lunch includes traditional kai food cooked in a hangi, with options for vegetarians, served in a traditional flax food basket (rourou). Local singing accompanies the meal along with rongoā (traditional healing) drinks and refreshments.
The second walk is a one-hour visit to the Historic H Tree, a natural formation shaped like the letter H, surrounded by local history. Photos are allowed during this walk.
The tour concludes with a visit to Mangamate Waterfall, a site of local significance for healing. Guests may swim in the river for refreshment before returning to accommodations.
Night Life Walk Option
Available in summer with pick-up at 8:00pm from Taupo, Rotorua, Whakatane, or Whirinaki Adventures Lodge in Te Whaiti. This 1-hour guided night walk features native wildlife sightings including bats, glowworms, and the New Zealand kiwi bird. Hot chocolate and cookies are served before the walk. Warm, comfortable clothing and footwear are recommended.
