Craters of the Moon

With countless craters, caverns, fumeroles and mud holes, Craters of the Moon is a sizzling expanse of geological activity.
This steam-filled experience spans 35 acres and was formed during a period of great experimentation in the 1950s. Visitors will think they're on another world as they wander around the 'lunar surface' observing steam vents, bubbling craters and unusual plants that thrive in this hot and steamy environment.
Craters of the Moon is suited to all ages and fitness levels and is accessible by wheelchair. Situated just north of Taupo, Craters of the Moon is 2km from State Highway 1.
Opening Hours:
Craters of the Moon is open 365 days per year.
8.30am - 6.00pm
December - 6th April (end of daylight saving) - 8.30am - approx 5.30pm
During the winter months - dependent on daylight
Admission Prices:
Adults: $6.00 per person
Children: (5 years to 12 years} $2.50 per child
Under 5 years: Free
Family Price: (2 Adults and maximum of 4 children 12years and under) $14.50
