Astonishing geothermal wonderland formed from the eruption of Mt Tarawera in 1886. Guided and self-guided eco walks, geysers, steaming crater lakes and boat cruises. Unmissable.

Waimangu Volcanic Valley is Rotorua's No.1 tourist destination. This geothermal park contains the stunning Lake Rotomahana, and is only 20 minutes from Rotorua city, and 40 minutes from Taupo. Wander amongst the steaming thermal landscape on one of a number of walks, from the easy Highlights tour, to the more challenging Mt Haszard Trail. Marvel at the Iodine Pool, the Marble Terrace, and the Inferno Crater.

There are three bus stops through the valley, so you don't have to walk all the way around, if you don't want to. It's a 2.5 hour stroll from the entrance, to the edge of Lake Rotomahana, from where you can hop on a delightful cruise across the water.

Take time out to explore the impressive Visitor Centre and Gift Shop. Have lunch in the cafe, or stock up on energy drinks before attempting the hike up Mt Haszard. At the top, you'll be rewarded with just the most amazing views in the area.

Self-guided tours which can take anything from 45 minutes to 4 hours, are just $37.00 (Adult) and $12.00 (Child 6-16 yrs). Infants under 6 are free.

Combine your tour with a boat cruise, or a trip out to the rainforest, and immerse yourself in this unique, historical landscape.
