Mitai Maori Village
Experience an entertaining and educational evening learning about Maori culture and tradition at the Mitai Maori Village including entertainment and tasty food.
The evening begins with a personal greeting and the opportunity to take photos with some of the village members in traditional dress.
Visitors can then learn about the village setting including natural surroundings of the Wai-o-whiro stream down which village members paddle a traditional waka (canoe) and the nearby glowworms in their natural habitat.
During the evening enjoy a traditionally cooked meal know as a hangi. A hangi is cooked in an earth oven and before eating visitors can watch it being lifted from the ground. The meal includes meat and poultry, vegetables and salads and a range of desserts.
A cultural concert includes the fearsome Haka as well as other songs and dances often performed by Maori groups and there is also the chance to learn more about ta moko - traditional tattoos, poi dancing, carving and the use of native flora in medicine.
Mitai Maori Village is suitable for all age groups and is a great introduction to Maori culture for the whole family.
The village experience runs every evening except Christmas day with three show times. Return transport from local accommodation can be arranged.
A trip to the village can also be combined with other Rotorua attractions - Rainbow Springs to see a Kiwi, relaxation at the Polynesian Spa or a trip to the Adventure Playground for a 4WD buggy ride.
