Tamaki Maori Village Experience is a must-visit for anybody interested in the history and traditions of New Zealand's indigenous people. This forest village, just minutes from the CBD, is an authentic settlement that allows visitors to experience first hand the fascinating life of the Maori.
Before you arrive on this organised trip, you'll be asked to nominate a 'chief' to represent your group. Your chosen leader will then be met by the resident tribe, and take part in a special ceremony signifying peace and welcome. Learn about how the Maori themselves came to New Zealand, in huge convoys of waka canoes, and be entertained with tales and songs that have been passed down generations of Maori through the centuries.
Watch the Maori perform the famous haka, and feel the shivers shoot down your spine as the Maori women sing enchanting songs of welcome and goodwill. Once accepted into the village by the tribe, you'll be taken to see various aspects of Maori life, from arts and crafts, to the traditional ways of working the land. See Maori warriors preparing for battle, listen to tales of days gone by, and enter the various dwellings and workstations that make up this fascinating Maori village.
Once you've integrated into village life, you'll be taken to the earth ovens to watch your evening meal being prepared. Succulent meats and vegetables from the land are all buried into the hot ground and cooked for hours. While your food bakes, you'll be summoned to the Sacred Meeting House to watch a traditional Maori show of song and dance and listen to the Maori welcoming speeches.
Then, it's dinner time! In a celebration of sharing, you'll sit down to a traditional 'hangi' feast of New Zealand meats and 100% organic vegetables. Have as much as you like - the Maori don't like to leave their guests hungry! Afterwards, simply lie back and look at the stars, as your hosts regale you with more stories and songs. The closing ceremony is a fitting end to what promises to be a unique evening, before you're returned to your accommodation with a head full of memories and a very full belly.
