Directions to Whakarewarewa - The Living Maori Village
The thermal village of Whakarewarewa has long been used by Maori as a settlement and is home to the Tuhourangi/Ngati Wahiao people.
The iwi (tribe) has been welcoming visitors to the village since the 1800s showing them their way of life and the natural geothermal wonders that surround the area.
The village is set amongst natural hot pools and thermal springs and geysers all of which can be seen during a visit.
Guided tours offer the chance to visit the Whare Tupuna (Ancestral Meeting House) and to find out more about life in the village and the traditions and culture of Maori. Guides can also explain more about the geothermal features and how they are used in things such as cooking and for health.
A number of different experiences are offered at the village including cultural performances and the chance to take part in a hangi - a meal cooked in the earth.
Visitors who would like a more in-depth experience should enquire about an overnight stay at the Marae, which includes the chance to try traditional Maori crafts and learn more about the customs.
The village is open from 8.30am to 5.00pm every day except Christmas Day.
