Wairakei International Golf Course
Rotorua
Majestic golf course set in the middle of a geothermal valley near Lake Taupo and the Huka Falls. International standard, open to golfers of all abilities. Clubhouse, bar, pro shop and practice areas.
Wairakei International Golf Course is the perfect day out for both professional and amateur golfers, and offers a uniquely structured course, designed in consultation with experts like architect Commander John Harris and 5-time British Open winner, Peter Thomson. Considered one of New Zealand's first championship-standard golf courses, Wairakei has fairways and greens that are moulded around million-year old rocks and valleys, with elevated tees and hazards that are built around naturally occurring anomalies in the earth.
The immaculate fairways and greens are surrounded by lush vegetation and perfectly sculpted trees, which also makes this course one of the most visually appealing in the country. The course also sits in the heart of a wildlife sanctuary, surrounded by a five-kilometre long fence that keeps out predators, but preserves valuable plants and flowers and, as of 2010, has been declared pest-free. Insects, native birds and valuable tree seedlings can now grow inside the course boundaries, free from danger, which in time will make Wairakei even more spectacular than it is today.
After a relaxing round of golf in this geothermal wonderland, enjoy a post-round drink in the clubhouse, or al fresco on the spacious terrace. The cafe bar is fully licenced, and has decks overlooking this most natural of golf courses. While away another hour in the chipping bunker and putting area, or sign up for some lessons at the dedicated golf school, where professional golf instructors will take you through your paces. The fully-stocked pro golf shop has everything you require if you need to hire equipment, as well as a fantastic range of clubs, clothing and other kit to get the most out of your golf day (or take home as a souvenir).
